Inflate 4 balloons and tied them together. You will see that they push on each other equally and this ends up pushing them into a Pyramid shape. Technically a tetrahedral shape, because it has 3 sides on every one of its faces.

4 atoms of the same type who are bound together will push each other pretty much the same way. This results in them forming the same shape.

This arrangement is very strong, which is why triangles are used in construction so much and you see them all over the places in bridges. And even on the atomic scale, it still has a very high degree of strength, as could be demonstrated by diamonds.
