Imagine a hook that rotates. It rotates one full spin and stops and hooks back where it started with a single trigger pull. That would be a single fire. The hook would spin indefinitely as long as the trigger is pulled, And re hook when trigger is released. That would be auto. And burst would be similar to a gear that rotates 3 times and rehooks. That would be over simplified but that’s the basic idea. Source: was the primary armour in the army as a secondary mos.

Essentially, it boils down to a series of cut-outs and other mechanical pieces. On an M-16, you will have a three position switch, SAFE – SEMI – AUTO/BURST. When you flick it off of safe and onto semi, you’re unblocking the trigger and allowing it to be pulled but a hook prevents the hammer from falling again with your finger on the trigger until you release it. When you switch it to auto, a sear triggers that hook to release the hammer everytime the bolt goes forward as long as your finger is on the trigger. Burst is a little more complicated, usually using a gear for this.

I’m not the best at describing this and it’s fairly mechanical
