As Sir Isaac Newton said, we stand on the shoulders of giants, meaning that most of the knowledge that is available to us has been compounded from generation to generation.

Octopuses are arguably the smartest animal. They can figure out complex challenges and are able to use things found in nature as tools. The catch is that they only live 1 to 5 years, as opposed to at least 35 years for humans.

Octopuses don’t live enough to be able to compound knowledge and pass it on.

You’d have to first prove to me that a dog isn’t at “the same stage of consciousness” as a human (whatever that means).

To really do that, you need to get a half-decent definition of consciousness. Finding one which people generally agree on is the real hard problem of talking about consciousness.

Too many people treat it like some sort of “soul” instead of the opposite of being unconscious.

I would say it is hard to answer since even we don’t know where exactly is consciousness in our brains. Or what exactly it is (at least great philosophers are still not on the same page).
