How come some some trees have purple leaves when chlorophyll is green?

Chlorophyll is not the only chemical that does what it does. It is the most efficient, so most plants use mostly chlorophyll with a minority of other chemicals which do the same thing with other portions of the light spectrum, but plants can survive with a different proportion of photosynthetic chemicals.

Their leaves contains in addition to chlorophyll also chemical compounds called anthrocyanins. They dominant the color of the leaves even though the chlorophyll is still there.
