How come we stop sneezing/coughing when we fall asleep?

I have terrible allergies when it’s windy. Sometimes my only solace is to fall asleep. Why does this make the sneezing and runny nose stop?

You don’t sneeze or cough because while you are asleep certain parts of your brain shut down, this includes the parts of your brain that causes you to sneeze and cough.

Your runny nose is a different story entirely.

Your nose still runs just as much as it did while awake but the difference is it runs down your throat and you swallow it into your stomach instead of it running out of your nose.
