Before photoshop you had to manually edit photographs with airbrushes.

When Stalin had one of his former allies *disposed of*, they’d go back and literally erase the guy from media photos too by carefully painting in the background instead.

It’s tedious and time consuming work to make it convincing, but it can be done.

It’s one of the places where the terms “cut” and “paste” came from, along with written documents. Careful work with a scalpel, glue, retouching ink and an airbrush, then rephotograph the result.

The phrase about someone being “airbrushed from history” comes from it too.
