How do birds and fish stay in formation?

How are they always able to keep in formation, even when they are under attack (for instance when a flock of fish is under attack by a shark)? It seems a hard task given their number.

Birds I’m not quite sure about, but fish have something called a lateral line on their body that helps them sense and detect changes in the water, so they can move in sync.

Basically they just line up with the ones close to them and since everyone is doing the same the formation stays the same.

My understanding is that that sense air pressure changes so it becomes flying by “feel” not by eye.
