How do blankets work?

Like, how do different materials keep you warmer than others? How come one layer of one material can be just as warm as multiple layers of another? And why do I feel warmer sleeping under the covers without clothes than under the covers with clothes?

Your body is this big thing that constantly creates heat. Similarly to coats in the winter, we use blankets to keep us warmer. This works in two ways. Air cools us down because it’s colder than our body temperature. This is called convection. Blankets also create a barrier to keep our heat from escaping.
