how do blue replacement indicator bristles on toothbrushes work?

Specifically, what are they dyed with / what are they made of that it fades over time? Does the color/material leach into your mouth?

The color is primarily in the outer layers of the blue bristles, which naturally wear down as you use them. It’s that simple.

Not OP, but I have a follow-up question: if the bristles of my toothbrush look worn out well before the blue colour is gone (and well within 3 months of using, which do I trust? The colour that says “we’re still good”; the general advice that says “change every three months”; or the bristles that say “please let me die in peace”…?

My dentist friend says as long as the bristles aren’t frayed you can keep using them even though the indicator bristles have faded.
