How do bonsai trees work?

I’ve seen the picture of an apple bonsai tree with a single apple on it and I want to know how that happened.

Trees growing in harsh mountain conditions, clinging to stones where there is little soil and the weather is merciless, often grow in miniature. They are ancient beings, hundreds of years old, having seen generation after generation of animal life being born and dying, yet still holding fast.

How can anyone see this and *not* be inspired?

Bonsai trees are the art form of creating that at home.
