How do bonsai trees work?

I’ve seen the picture of an apple bonsai tree with a single apple on it and I want to know how that happened.

Bonsai are essentially a living art form, using trees as a medium. It combines horticultural knowledge, aesthetic design principles, and an eastern cultural background.

The goal of bonsai is to grow miniaturized trees that look like they’re ancient. To do that, you bring in the three things I mentioned above.

More specifically, if an apple bonsai is grown properly and is healthy (and the flower buds are left intact in the spring), it can produce fruit. The size depends on the cultivar of the tree, but most of them will retain their original size, due to reproductive DNA of that specific variety.

As for the single fruit, it could have been an aesthetic choice to keep only one, or a horticultural one, or maybe even a cultural one that I’m not aware of. A lot of Japanese and Chinese bonsai and penjing aesthetics follow certain poetic, mystical and cultural mores.
