The ones for safety. How do they inflate so fast? Where’s that air coming from?

They used to use a chemical called sodium azide that reacts explosively when triggered to release nitrogen gas and some salty dust.

I believe the formulation has changed more recently to use less feisty explosives, but they’re still basically a bomb that’s inflating a balloon real fast.

Since they’re powered by bombs, airbags can be quite dangerous to work on or handle, or if they go off unexpectedly.

It a small explosion. Basically the deceleration of a crash causes a small charge to detonate which fills the bag with gas pretty much instantly.
