how do chimneys work??

I’ve always been curious that if chimneys are meant to let smoke or air out of the house then how do they prevent rain, snow, sleet, etc. From getting in?

Chimneys usually have their own little umbrellas to keep the rain or elements from falling down them. There’s also a piece you can close from inside the house to shut the chimney, like a window, to keep the breeze out when there’s no fire.

The shape of them, especially the pot thing on top, stops rain going straight down, but let’s smoke out.

Strong Wind can get in and make the chimney make a whooshing noise though. It’s quite eerie until you work out what’s making the noise.
