Some viruses and bacteria are able to survive outside of a host for a while. Usually they need to be in a moist environment. So if you cough or sneeze, a little bit of mucus and/or saliva is expelled. The virus or bacteria are stuck to those moisture particles and can easily be inhaled by anyone else nearby.
