How do fire extinguishers work?

Like, I get that they use chemicals or something to stop fires, but how?

There are a few different types, for different types of fire (general, electrical, grease, etc.) but by and large I believe they work by reacting with oxygen so the fire cannot use it and goes out – fire needs both fuel and oxygen to burn.

Fires need three basic things. Heat, fuel, and oxygen. Fire extinguishers work by removing one of those three. If even one is removed then the fire dies. Also called the fire triangle.
