How do forks work?

If you stab something vertically, shouldn’t it fall off because the tines come together at the bottom?

They mostly use friction and the moderately low-weight of the food you are forking. You can have the same effect by stabbing your food with a flathead screwdriver, but I imagine it’s much less efficient.

There are two forces at play. Gravity is pulling your food towards Earth while friction with the food is working against that. If the force of gravity is less than the force of [static friction](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friction#Static_friction), the food will stay in place and hopefully find itself quickly in your mouth.

Bon appetit!
