In the most basic terms, an explosion is contained within a tube that is sealed on one end and that causes the bullet to be pushed forward because it is traveling in the direction of least resistance.

Explosive powders were first used in China during the 9th century AD. But actual gun powder was not recorded in texts until the 11th century. Around 1040-1044 AD.
