I understand that in a work environment, different types of servers doing specific tasks can be each a VM.

A virtual machine is really just an operating system installed on a small portion of a computer, usually alongside many other versions of the same operating system on a server, but could also be on a regular computer (just not as many can fit on a regular PC as can on a server). Then to use your virtual machine you connect through another computer. When on the same work network this is easier, but at home they have programs that can use to connect you to your work network so you are able to see the virtual machines they have there. All images you see and input you send just have to go over the network so they can be slower then a normal computer.
