How do mouthguards work?

How do mouthguards work when you’re asleep? If you grind your teeth in your sleep, wouldn’t you still grind them now just with plastic or something between them?

Yes you will still grind them, but now you aren’t grinding teeth against teeth. I grind my teeth in my sleep (have for years) and because of it, a couple of my incisors have been ground down and flattened. With a mouth guard, that grinding wouldn’t have happened as the rubber acts as a soft, pressure absorbing barrier between my teeth.
