How do music recognition apps work?

In: Technology

Apps like Shazam and others have a massive library of music that is analyzed. It takes the frequencies of the music (what the audio actually sounds like) and matches that unique frequency combination along a timeline. When you have the app listens to a song, you’re creating a snapshot of a song for the app to compare to its library. When the app gets your snapshot of the song, it goes and compares it to its database. If there’s a match, it returns and gives you the info about the song that matched. Think of how crime shows stylize the fingerprint matching that forensics does. They have their fingerprint in question, and it’s compared against their database until they find a match.
