How do people know if someone passed away peacefully in their sleep?

Is this just said to ease the victim’s friends and family? How do they know they didn’t re-gain consciousness/wake up right before passing, and how badly would that suck?

If you don’t pass away peacefully, you would not appear looking peacefully sleeping when you are dead.

Sometimes, it’s because the way they died happens instantly so there would be no chance for suffering. Other times, it’s because the corpse is still just lying there in bed tucked in with it’s hands folded across the chest or whatever pose is consistent with just having died without a struggle.

Well, as an example of someone who didnt pass away peacefully in their sleep, my great-oma died of an asthma attack sometime in the middle of the night in her bed, and they knew she hadnt passed away in her sleep because the room was absolutely covered in blood, as she struggled to breathe she kicked around and hit her shins on the bedposts, resulting in massive blood loss from thin skin and varicose veins.

People dont tend to “die easy” when they are awake, and while you cannot be 100% sure they were asleep the moment they died its usually a good bet if they havent even moved from life passing to death.
