The mass of a tree is primarily carbon which comes from CO2 used during photosynthesis.

Hard bark structure can be understood as analogy of nail growing. This bark are the analogous hard nails of tree which grows outwards which fall off in event of animal climbing or scratching the tree protecting the tree and deterring insect from drilling into the stem.
