When the pregnancy occurs, certain hormones start to appear in the blood that aren’t there before or at least aren’t there in significant amounts. Some of that gets filtrated and ends up in urine. The stick (test) has some special reagents in it that interact with the hormones and the test line appears and shows the positive result when the pregnant lady pees on it.

When you get pregnant your body starts producing more of a certain hormone and that hormone finds its way in urine. So when you pee on the stick, it’s testing for a certain amount of that hormone. If you have more of it, it gives you a positive result.
