How do scientists make something as small and complex as nanobots?

Nanobots are science fiction. There are hard limits, the size of atoms and electric gates. Maybe they can be overcome, maybe not.
Technology miniaturization has come along way largely due to computer processor manufacturing. The current Intel microprocessor has 6 *billion* transistors in something with only half the area of a US postage stamp(270mm^2).
This technology and processes that enable it allow incredibly small things to be made that are incredibly complex.
