A (modern) traditional synth is basically a little computer that can modify and mix sounds on demand, with a large musical keyboard as the input instead of a mouse+keyboard. Arguably, every PC is doing the same thing as a synth when its using the computer’s audio outputs to make sound. Older analog synths didn’t have a computer inside and had analog circuits to create/shape electrical waves, but in the end the results are basically the same.
