I would suggest looking at [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uynBcLr8fEc) that shows exactly how it works and show high-speed video of it hitting a target.

It is a syringe that is compressed by gas pressure at the end, It ejects liquid trou the side of the needle and not the end like a normal syringe. You put a small piece of a tube around the needle that blocks the hole and it is pushed back when it hit the target.

It takes to have an effect. Just look at some video on youtube of when it is done on an animal and you can see that it takes time to have an effect. It can take a few minutes.

The darts are basically needles with a resivoire of a drug. Once injected, the drug needs to enter the blood stream and then circulate to the brain. Just like when we go under anesthesia, it takes a little bit of time for the drugs to really start kicking in.
