How do those skyscrapers that are built around a core work?

Like the original world trade centre, what’s so special about building them this way and how does it keep all the weight up?

The idea is that, rather than evenly distributing the support columns, you concentrate them in one ring around the outside, and one ring in the middle. With all that space between the supports, you can’t build the sturdiest floors, but you don’t need very sturdy floors for office space.
