I want to preface this by saying that I am in no way qualified to give any actual advice on training for a marathon, and this is just my understanding. I welcome any corrections, and would recommend using my answer as a source of words/topics to investigate further instead of as gospel.
With that disclaimer aside, Zone 2 training specifically trains your mitochondria (powerhouse of the cell) to be better at using oxygen for energy. Using oxygen for energy is our body’s most efficient energy pathway, and avoids the lactic acid build up that reduces performance. So if you can get your energy output in zone 2 higher, you’ll be a more efficient athlete overall.
