But more generally, they freeze at the bottom first, and if temperatures remain constantly below freezing the water contacting the ice at the bottom will freeze, tiny layer by tiny layer in much the same way a stalagmite forms, but much more quickly. Eventually it’ll reach the top and the source, too, will freeze up, conditions allowing.
