We can identify that things past a certain distance from us are moving away from us. The speed that a galaxy moves away from us is larger the further away the galaxy already is.

There are a couple of ways to interpret this. If you want to say that stuff is just moving away from us and that’s that, you can. Or you can say the space itself is expanding. Both are just informal verbal interpretations of the math.
