Our brains don’t know that the image on the retina is inverted, and they don’t need to know. All they know is that a signal on a particular nerve coming from the retina corresponds to light from a particular direction.

Your brain is extremely good at interpreting data based on your other senses and making adjustments where needed. There was actually a famous experiment in the late 1800’s where scientists wore glasses that inverted their version. After wearing the glasses 24×7 for a while they found that their brains actually corrected the image to make it right-side up. Once that change occurred though, taking off the glasses made the world look inverted (the brain recovered from this after a while as well.

Our brain interprets the data from our eyes and “flips” it correctly.

If you wore glasses to invert your vision, your brain will adjust to it in a week. However, taking them off will make your brain think your vision is inverted again!

Your brain knows that the bottom of the retina represents the top of the image and the top of the retina represents the bottom of the image and uses the sensory data accordingly when rendering a picture of reality for you.
