How do wires for phone chargers or headsets and various electronics stop working or lose effectiveness?

They don’t lose effectiveness unless they physically break. Constant cycles of plugging, unplugging and bending cause the wires to break at the connector, or the connector itself wears out and is unable to maintain contact.
