You base your result on the expected melting point of that element. So for example you mix two reactants and the theoretical melting point is 666. But when you test the melting point it was 777 that would mean your product is not pure. I always thought of it like particles so if you have X particle you will get a certain melting point but the moment you add another Y particle you will increase the melting point , now in the books there is a certain melting point for XY particles if it’s not within the expected melting point that mean you might have XY, with a little Y and X particles around giving you an inaccurate melting point.
