How do you track a star in the night sky for a long period of time using an optical telescope or camera?

Simple answer is, you need to correct all the time for Earth’s rotation. This is done by aligning the telescopes mount to the axis of rotation of Earth. The rotational speed is very well known, and can be applied using small gear/motor. This is a simple explanation though.
