A random female baby is chosen, then a special honey called fertile honey is given to them. Most worker bees are fed normal honey, which has less nutrients and thus they have a shorter life. But the soon to be queen bee is given fertile honey for their entire lives, allowing them to be the only mature female , and live longer than the other bees.
