All pistons connect to spinning crankshaft so they go up and down regularly.

Piston in cylinder goes down (injection stroke).

Inject fuel and air in cylinder.

Piston goes up (compression stroke).

Gas is compressed.

Spark plug goes off igniting fuel/air mixture.

Combusting fuel rapidly expands pushing piston down (power stroke).

The piston comes back up expelling exhaust (exhaust stroke).

Rinse and repeat.
