Gas is squirted into a chamber along with air and lighted up with an electric spark which causes a small explosion which pushes a piece of metal (piston) through a tube (cylinder) which pushes onto a shaft (crankshaft) rotating it along with other similar tubes. The alternating explosions and movements of the different pistons creates a cycle where the crankshaft spins, the explosions occur, the exhaust is expelled, the valves push in more gas and more air and the cycle repeats itself over and over again. The movement from the crankshaft is eventually translated mechanically into movement to the wheels.

Here is a video about the engine.
