: How does a chkdsk works?

I know that it can repair corrupted files, but how? How can the program identify what’s wrong and fix it?

It takes a look at the primary and backup disk maps/directories. It compares each record, to see which sectors the file occupies, and makes sure those sectors are marked as “used”. There is redundant information, to enable such programs to exist, and by slowly combining all the available information it can get a better understanding of the file system than the ordinary file access algorithms would; that’s why it takes a long time and a lot of memory.

It essentially scans sectors on your disk. Data and metadata and checks for any corrupted “chunks”. If found, it can be rolled back to previous data.
