how does a combination lock work?

There are lots of mechanisms, the simple ones with several code wheels simply have a hole corresponding to the number of the combination, if you line up all the holes in all the wheels, the lock can open

The ones with one wheel you turn around, and then back, and then the other way are a little different, the wheels with holes are still there, but you move the first wheel, and then once you rotate it a full revolution, it starts turning the second wheel, and then again, so you rotate the wheel all the way to set the last wheel, then turn around so the last wheel is not engaged and you can only turn the second one, and then you set the first one, it’s a bit complicated to explain with text, but there are 3d animations that explain this much better
