How does a diesel engine utilize engine braking if there is no throttle body to control air intake like in a gas engine?

I have a Duramax pickup with a turbo brake- it basically downshifts the transmission and spools up the turbo without adding any fuel, so it really makes braking force by heating air and blowing it out the exhaust. It makes about 150 hp in braking power.
