How does a mouth guard help with teeth clenching at night?

I mean you still clench, but now there’s just plastic in between.

The problem with jaw clenching is it causes you to grind your teeth, damaging the enamel. The mouthguard acts as a cushion to protect the enamel.

If you’re grinding your teeth while asleep there is a high chance you have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is much worse than people realize and I would definitely look into it.

Mine is tiny and clicks onto my front teeth. I got it to cut down on clenching and grinding. Grinding is obvious because the teeth can’t touch, but the clench is more interesting. By putting a small gap in there the muscles can’t clamp down fully – try it: bite down naturally and then clench. You can feel it up the side of your head. Now, put a pen/pencil/? between your front teeth and slowly bare down. You should notice that those side muscles can never fully engage.
It took some getting used to, but my morning migraines vanished.
