How does a printer not curl paper while it is going through the machine?

Paper only permanently curls if you bend it tight enough to crease it. Printers are designed to bend it smoothly and gently, so it never creases.

In general, solid materials don’t permanently deform unless you bend them past a point-of-no-return (called the *yield point*). After that point, brittle materials snap, while ductile materials start to permanently deform. But if you only bend the material gently, so it never reaches that point-of-no-return, then it will spring back unaffected once you let go. This is how springs and paperclips work.
