Take for example ADHD. How can a psychologist tell the difference between someone who’s just super hyper and someone who has ADHD?

It’s all definitions. There really isn’t any very good way of measuring any of this. Contrary to many people’s belief, Psychology is NOT a science. They do perform experiments, but as mentioned there is no good way of measuring anything. Psychology and all the “soft” science have what is known as the [Replication Crisis.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replication_crisis) Basically they have a hard time reproducing the results of experiments which is at the foundation of the scientific method.

As one person said, they created a book (the DSM) where they can cross reference a list of symptoms against a list of symptoms that they have defined comprise a disorder. If you have match a certain number of symptoms they’ll say you have that disorder.
