The face detection works with invisible light, which can be picked up by the camera. If you point your camera to the front of an iPhone or even a TV remote, you can see the purple light which can’t be seen with your own eyes.
On the other hand, when you try to take a photo in the dark, it’ll take longer to gather enough light to be able to make an image out of it, and this can’t be done in an instant.
