How does “auto generated subtitles” translate audio into text?

Basically you take the software that turns speech into text – “Okay Google, how is what I’m saying to you right now showing up on my phone’s screen?” – and point it at a youtube video’s audio track. Take all the text it produces and make it into a subtitle feed.
Obviously it’s not perfect, but it’s better than nothing.
