Your body has dozens of different pathways in which it communicates things like “how am I feeling?”. A significant one is called hormones. A hormone is a material your body sends to different organs to say things like “Im hungry. You should eat.” Or “Danger. Need available energy to respond to threat. Time to break down energy reserves and use them” It also controls how you feel. Dopamine is a hormone meant to motivate you, oxytocin is a hormone that makes you bond to others, etc. These are all crucial for survival and social wellness.
Bipolar disorder is one of many ways that irregularities in these inner communication systems can express themselves.
Im sorry that this explaination is very vague. Its hard for me to explain it like to a 5 year old. Many hormones are not specific to one feeling or one occasion. For example. Dopamine and Seratonin are about motivation and excitement, but being excited isnt just good. A person whose very angry, very scared, is also “excited”. These hormones also express themselves for those states of mind.
Slight imbalances in these hormones can then cause wild mood swings.
