How does carbon monoxide kill you?

Your blood cells have a protein called hemoglobin that binds oxygen to bring to the cells and carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs. Carbon monoxide (CO) binds to hemoglobin really well and is very slow to unbind. That means oxygen can’t bind to be taken to the cells.
Importantly, now oxygen in your lungs can’t get to your brain which will kill you if it lasts long enough.
