How does cigarettes cause a smoker’s voice as people age?

Tobacco smoke causes the vocal cords to relax deepening the speaker’s voice somewhat. The smoke also is irritating and damaging to everything it comes into contact with, including the vocal cords and the parts of the mouth and throat involved with speech.
