How does cough syrup works and does it metter if I swallow it slowly?

Dextromethorphan hydrobromide is the most common active ingredient and a nerve numbing agent which basically dulls our senses. By doing so it also dulls our reflex which tells us we need to cough. Take too much and it starts affecting our other senses to the point that you start to feel pretty weird.
