How does exercise make your heart “stronger”?

If the heart can’t really grow more muscle, how can the body keep all parts of the body well oxygenated if it’s can’t “pump harder”? In fact, peoples’ resting heart rate goes down if they regularly exercise, which doesn’t make sense to me since your body needs to now sustain more muscle.

With exercise, the muscles in the heart become stronger and more efficient, like any muscle. Your heart does get larger as it gets stronger – its walls thicken and it becomes better at pushing more blood per beat.

Your body does need to sustain more muscle after exercise, but the muscles also become more efficient at absorbing oxygen and the blood becomes more efficient at carrying it. People with a lot of muscle mass lose it more quickly if they don’t exercise regularly.
